Freelance Writing – Taking $2-$3 Per Article Freelance Writing Jobs is Not Insanity
By Kristine Cruz

Most freelance writers charge according to how much they are worth. However, these rates are highly variable among different freelance writers. What could be a good rate for one may be a slave rate for another.

$2 or $3 may seem little, and yet there are still writers who take these freelance writing jobs regularly. We cannot blame them, nor should we condemn them for doing so. Especially if they are just starting out in the freelance writing industry, these gigs are actually opportunities for those writers. While other writers may scoff and smirk at these rates, they should still respect other writers’ decisions.

Why do writers take these low-paying jobs? Here are some real reasons.

  1. Experience & Practice – Not every freelance writer is an established writer. A lot of them are just starting out. Think of it this way: other people volunteer or work as interns in companies with little or no pay just to get experience, just so they’d know the game. These $2 to $3 articles are like that for freelance writers. They are getting experience, training themselves along the way, and simply improving themselves.
  2. Reputation – Since most new writers do not have something to show to their potential clients, they could take these articles as a start to build on their reputation. While other clients may not let them use these articles as part of their portfolios, freelance writers can always ask them if they can be used as references for future projects.
  3. Extra Income – It may not seem like a big amount of money, but then it is a good way to supplement your own income. At $3 a day, or $15 a week, you can easily make $60 to $100 a month depending on your own preferences. It’s quite enough to give you extra savings, to pay for your daily transportation fares, or to pay for your daily meals.
  4. Low Cost of Living - $2 or $3 may sound small to other people, but where there is a lower cost of living, its value also increases. In a place where you can live at $2 to $3 for a whole day, writing these articles is enough to let them live.

With all these things in mind, it just comes down to one thing: respect for other writers’ decisions. Taking such jobs is not insanity, and we should all accept that as freelancers, our rates differ from one another. If you are just starting, then these low-paying gigs will give you lots of benefits as you continue to hone your writing skills. Just remember to keep on finding better opportunities, and move up the ranks of the freelance writing industry along the way.

Hi Sunitha,

Essays.ph is perhaps only geared towards Filipino freelance writers. The first place you ought to look for is your own craigslist :)

Thanks for visiting :)
